Medusa, one of the Gorgons. Three frightful sisters, daughters to Phorcys and Ceto. They had snakes for hair and to look on them turned mortals to stone. Thier names were "Steno, the mighty," "Euryale, the wide wandering," and "Medusa, the cunning one." Medusa was sometimes called Medusa the Queen. She was the youngest of the sisters, alone among them was mortal, and was eventually slain by Perseus. He killed her with the aid of various magic accounterments. By looking in a mirror and striking backwards with his sword, off came her head. At the moment of her death she was pregnant by Poseidon and from her blood sprng Pegasus, the white winged horse, and Chysaor, the monster who later fathered Geryon and Echidna. Medusa's pertrifying head adorned the aegis of Zeus and Athena.
