Persephone, daughter to Zeus and Demeter. Hades rose suddenly from the
underworld and seized her and carried
her down to his realm. All growth and vegetation ceased in the world above while disconsolate Demeter sought her. Zeus finally ruled that Hades must give her up unless she had, by some word or act, consented to her own abduction. It turned out
that she had eaten pomegranate seeds and because of that she was allowed to return to the upper world only six months out of each year.
Some say nine months in the upper world and three in the underworld. Persephone is at once the Goddess of fertility and a Goddess of death and so matches her spouse
Hades, the God of wealth and the God of death. Demeter Goddess of nature. She misses her daughter
when Persephone goes to spend half the year with her husband Hades. She becomes a bit depressed and awaits her return. Hence, fall and winter.
